What is Eid ul Fitr & Sunnah of Eid Salah
Eid ul Fitr is one of the most joyful occasions in Islam, marking the end of Ramadan and the beginning of Shawwal. It's a day of gratitude, togetherness and celebration after a whole month of fasting, prayer and coming closer to Allah.
Sunnah of Eid ul Fitr
Eid is a happy occasion to celebrate the end of Ramadan, a month of fasting, prayer and reflection. Muslims around the world follow the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and the traditions. Here are the most important ways for celebrating Eid:
- Before you go to pray, take a bath (Ghusl) or perform wudu (ablution).
- Use a toothbrush or Miswaak.
- Wear your best clothes on this day if you have new clothes, wear them!
- Before leaving for the Eid prayer, eat an odd number of dates. This is specifically for Eid ul Fitr! (Sahih Bukhari: 953)
- Pay Zakat al-Fitr (Fitrana) before the Eid prayer this is very important and must be done before salah.
- Recite the following "Takbeer" on your way to and from the Eid prayer.
- After the Eid prayer, listen to the sermon (khutbah). (An-Nasai 1517)
- Take different routes to and from the mosque after Eid Namaz. (Sahih Bukhari 986)
How to Pray Eid Salah
In the first rak'ah, say Takbirat al-Ihram ("Allahu Akbar" to start the prayer), followed by six or seven more takbirs. This is based on the hadith of Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her): "The takbir of al-Fitr and al-Adha is seven takbirs in the first rak'ah and five takbirs in the second, apart from the takbir of ruku'." (Abu Dawud, classified as sahih by al-Albani in Irwa' al-Ghalil, 639)
Eid Salah is a special 2 Rak'ah prayer performed on Eid ul Fitr and Eid ul Adha with extra Takbirs. Unlike regular prayers, it has no Adhan or Iqamah and is performed in congregation preferably in an open area (Eidgah).
The prayer starts with Takbirat al-Ihram, then the Imam recites 6-7 more Takbirs (3 in Hanafi). After the Takbirs, hands are placed on the chest (or below the navel in Hanafi fiqh) and the Imam recites Surah Al-Fatihah and another Surah (usually Surah Al-A'la or Surah Qaf), followed by Ruku and Sujood.
In the second Rak'ah, the Imam recites Surah al-Fatihah and another surah (usually Surah Al-Ghashiyah or Surah Al-Qamar), then 5 more Takbirs (3 in Hanafi). For each Takbir, raise your hands to your ears/shoulders and let them fall to your side. The prayer ends with Ruku, Sujood, Tashahhud and Tasleem.
After the prayer, the Imam delivers a Khutbah (sermon) which is Sunnah to listen to. Then Muslims greet each other with "Eid Mubarak" and do acts of charity and kindness.
Takbir al Eid
Takbeer Tashreeq in Arabic:
اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ لَا إلَهَ إلَّا اللَّهُ وَاَللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ وَلِلَّهِ الْحَمْد
Transliteration: Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar La Ilaha Ilallah Wallahu Akbar Allahu Akbar Wa Lillahil Hamd
Meaning: Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest. There is no deity (no god) besides Allah and Allah is the greatest. Allah is the greatest and to Allah all praises belong. (Irwa Al Ghalil: 3/125)
Zakat al-Fitr (Fitrana)
Giving Zakat al-Fitr (Fitrana) before Eid ul Fitr prayer is not just recommended it's obligatory! This is what makes Eid ul Fitr different from Eid ul Adha. While Eid ul Adha has Qurbani, Eid ul Fitr has Fitrana.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ ordained Zakat al-Fitr to purify the fasting person from indecent words or actions during Ramadan and to provide food for the needy so they can also enjoy Eid.
There's a Hadith from Ibn Abbas (R.A.) where Rasulullah ﷺ said:
"The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) ordained Zakat al-Fitr to purify the fasting person from indecent words or actions, and to provide food for the needy. It is accepted as zakat for the person who gives it before the Eid prayer; but it is a mere sadaqah for the one who gives it after the prayer." (Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah)
This Hadith shows how serious Fitrana is. If someone delays it until after Eid prayer, they miss the real reward. Fitrana is a big chance to purify our fast, help the poor celebrate Eid, and follow the beautiful sunnah of our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
The amount of Zakat al-Fitr is one saa' (approximately 2.5–3 kg) of staple food like dates, barley, wheat, or rice. The monetary value varies by region for 2026, the Zakāt al-Fiṭr amount is recommended to be $10 in the USA according to the Fiqh Council of North America, though it can vary based on local food prices.
