حَدَّثَنَا عِيسَى بْنُ حَمَّادٍ، أَخْبَرَنَا اللَّيْثُ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ، عَنْ بُكَيْرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، عَنِ الْمُنْذِرِ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ، أَنَّ فَاطِمَةَ بِنْتَ أَبِي حُبَيْشٍ، حَدَّثَتْهُ أَنَّهَا، سَأَلَتْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَشَكَتْ إِلَيْهِ الدَّمَ فَقَالَ لَهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم " إِنَّمَا ذَلِكَ عِرْقٌ فَانْظُرِي إِذَا أَتَى قُرْؤُكِ فَلاَ تُصَلِّي فَإِذَا مَرَّ قُرْؤُكِ فَتَطَهَّرِي ثُمَّ صَلِّي مَا بَيْنَ الْقُرْءِ إِلَى الْقُرْءِ " .
Fatimah daughter of AbuHubaysh Narrated from:
Urwah ibn az-Zubayr said that Fatimah daughter of AbuHubaysh narrated to him that she asked the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and complained to him about the flowing of (her) blood. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to her: That is only (due to) a vein: look, when your menstruation comes, do not pray; and when your menstruation ends, wash yourself and then offer prayer during the period from one menstruation to another.

Summary of Sunan Abi Dawud Hadith 280
Fatimah daughter of Abu Hubaish complained to the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم about the flowing of her blood. He told her that it was only due to a vein. Then he gave a clear instruction: when her menstruation comes, she should not pray; when her menstruation ends, she should wash herself and pray during the time between one menstruation and the next. This is a key “istihadah hadith” and is often searched as “blood vessel not menses hadith.” The teaching is easy to follow from the text. Not every flowing blood in this case was treated as menses. The sign used in the hadith is the arrival and passing of her menstruation.
What we learn from this hadith
- The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم described the bleeding as due to a vein.
- She was told not to pray when menstruation came.
- When menstruation ended, she was told to wash and pray between periods.
