حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ الدِّمَشْقِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ، - يَعْنِي الدَّرَاوَرْدِيَّ - عَنْ رَبِيعَةَ بْنِ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ سَعِيدِ بْنِ سُوَيْدٍ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا حُمَيْدٍ، أَوْ أَبَا أُسَيْدٍ الأَنْصَارِيَّ يَقُولُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم " إِذَا دَخَلَ أَحَدُكُمُ الْمَسْجِدَ فَلْيُسَلِّمْ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم ثُمَّ لْيَقُلِ اللَّهُمَّ افْتَحْ لِي أَبْوَابَ رَحْمَتِكَ فَإِذَا خَرَجَ فَلْيَقُلِ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ " .
Abu Usaid al-Ansari Narrated from:
Abu Usaid al-Ansari reported the Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him) as saying: when any of you enters the mosque he should invoke blessing on the prophet (ﷺ) and then he should say: O Allah, open to me the gates of thy mercy. And when he goes out, he should say: O Allah, I ask thee out of Thine abundance.

Summary of Sunan Abi Dawud Hadith 465
This hadith gives the well-known dua for entering mosque and dua for leaving mosque. When entering, a Muslim should send blessings on the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and then ask Allah to open the gates of His mercy. When leaving, he should ask Allah from His abundance. The wording is short, easy to memorize, and full of meaning. Entering the mosque is linked with mercy because a person is going into a place of worship. Leaving is linked with Allah’s bounty because a person returns to daily needs and work. The hadith keeps the heart connected to Allah at both moments. It teaches that mosque manners are not only physical; they also include words of remembrance.
What we learn from this hadith
- Send blessings on the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم when entering the mosque.
- Ask Allah to open the gates of His mercy when entering.
- Ask Allah from His abundance when leaving the mosque.
