Abu Sa'id al-Khudri Narrated from:

Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "On the Day of Resurrection Death will be brought forward in the shape of a black and white ram. Then a call maker will call, 'O people of Paradise!' Thereupon they will stretch their necks and look carefully. The caller will say, 'Do you know this?' They will say, 'Yes, this is Death.' By then all of them will have seen it.Then it will be announced again, 'O people of Hell !' They will stretch their necks and look carefully. The caller will say, 'Do you know this?' They will say, 'Yes, this is Death.' And by then all of them will have seen it. Then it (that ram) will be slaughtered and the caller will say, 'O people of Paradise! Eternity for you and no death O people of Hell! Eternity for you and no death."'Then the Prophet, recited:-- 'And warn them of the Day of distress when the case has been decided, while (now) they are in a state of carelessness (i.e. the people of the world) and they do not believe.' Summary of Sahih Bukhari Hadith 4730

This hadith about death being slaughtered describes a scene on the Day of Resurrection. Death will be brought in the shape of a black and white ram. The people of Paradise will be called and will recognize it as death. Then the people of Hell will be called and will also recognize it. After that, death will be slaughtered, and the announcement will be made: people of Paradise will have eternity and no death, and people of Hell will have eternity and no death. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم then recited the verse about warning them of the Day of distress when the matter has been decided. The hadith is serious and direct. It reminds the reader that the Hereafter is not a temporary stop, and heedlessness in this world is dangerous.

What we learn from this hadith

  • Death will be shown and then ended in the Hereafter.
  • The people of Paradise and Hell will both recognize death.
  • The announcement points to lasting life after the final judgment.
  • The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم used the verse to warn people while they can still take heed.
