Ka'b bin 'Ujrah Narrated from:
It was said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! We know how to greet you, but how to invoke Allah for you?" The Prophet said, "Say: Allahumma salli ala Muhammadin wa'ala `Ali Muhammaddin, kama sallaita 'ala all Ibrahim, innaka Hamidun Majid."

Summary of Sahih Bukhari Hadith 4797
This hadith about salawat answers a direct question from the companions. They said they knew how to greet the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, but asked how to invoke Allah for him. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم taught them to say: O Allah, send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent prayers upon the family of Ibrahim; You are Praiseworthy and Glorious. He also taught them to ask Allah to bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as He blessed the family of Ibrahim. The hadith is loved because it gives the wording of salawat from the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم himself. It is a clear guide for sending blessings in the way he taught.
