Summary of Sahih Bukhari Hadith 5270

This Hadith reports a serious legal case brought before the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم. A man from Bani Aslam came to the mosque and said that he had committed illegal sexual intercourse. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم turned away, but the man moved and repeated his confession until he had testified against himself four times. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم then asked whether he was insane and whether he was married. After the man answered yes to being married, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم ordered the stated punishment. The main point in the text is the careful process before judgment: repeated confession, checking mental state, and asking about marital status before the case moved forward.

What we learn from this hadith

  • The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم did not act on the first statement right away.
  • The man testified against himself four times before the ruling was given.
  • The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم checked his mental state and marital status.
  • Serious legal matters were handled with verification, not haste.
