Hadith About Slaughtering Before Eid Prayer and Repeating Qurbani

Sahih BukhariHadith Number 5561

Anas Narrated from:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Whoever slaughtered the sacrifice before the `Id prayer, should repeat it (slaughter another one)." A man said "This is the day on which meat is desired." Then he mentioned the need of his neighbors (for meat) and the Prophet (ﷺ) seemed to accept his excuse. The man said, "I have a Jadha'a which is to me better than two sheep." The Prophet (ﷺ) allowed him (to slaughter it as a sacrifice). But I do not know whether this permission was general for all Muslims or not. The Prophet (ﷺ) then went towards two rams and slaughtered them, and the people went towards their sheep and slaughtered them.

Summary of Sahih Bukhari Hadith 5561

This Hadith focuses on a direct instruction: whoever slaughtered before the Eid prayer should repeat the sacrifice. A man then explained that the day was one when meat was desired, and he mentioned the need of his neighbors. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم seemed to accept his excuse, and the man said he had a Jadha'a that he considered better than two sheep. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم allowed him to use it. The narrator, Anas, carefully added that he did not know whether this permission was general for all Muslims or only for that man. This makes the Hadith important for searches about Qurbani before Eid prayer, sacrifice timing, and neighborly need, while also showing care in reporting what is known and what is not known.

What we learn from this hadith

  • Slaughtering before the Eid prayer requires another sacrifice according to this Hadith.
  • The man’s mention of neighbors shows that people were thinking about sharing meat.
  • The narrator avoided claiming that the permission was general when he was unsure.
