حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ الْمُقَدَّمِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا فُضَيْلُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ عُقْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا حَكِيمُ بْنُ أَبِي حُرَّةَ الأَسْلَمِيُّ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ سُئِلَ عَنْ رَجُلٍ، نَذَرَ أَنْ لاَ، يَأْتِيَ عَلَيْهِ يَوْمٌ إِلاَّ صَامَ، فَوَافَقَ يَوْمَ أَضْحًى أَوْ فِطْرٍ. فَقَالَ لَقَدْ كَانَ لَكُمْ فِي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ، لَمْ يَكُنْ يَصُومُ يَوْمَ الأَضْحَى وَالْفِطْرِ، وَلاَ يَرَى صِيَامَهُمَا.
`Abdullah bin `Umar Narrated from:
Narrated `Abdullah bin `Umar: that he was asked about a man who had vowed that he would fast all the days of his life then the day of `Id al Adha or `Id-al-Fitr came. `Abdullah bin `Umar said: You have indeed a good example in Allah's Messenger (ﷺ). He did not fast on the day of `Id al Adha or the day of `Id-al-Fitr, and we do not intend fasting on these two days.

This hadith about fasting on Eid answers a question about a man who vowed to fast every day of his life. Then Eid al-Adha or Eid al-Fitr came. Abdullah bin Umar responded by pointing to the good example of Allah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم. He said the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم did not fast on the day of Eid al-Adha or the day of Eid al-Fitr, and they did not intend fasting on those two days. The narration teaches that a personal vow does not remove the Prophet’s صلى الله عليه وسلم example. A person may make a vow to fast regularly, but the two Eid days are treated differently in this report. The Sunnah guides how vows are applied.
What we learn from this hadith
- The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم did not fast on Eid al-Adha or Eid al-Fitr.
- A vow to fast does not cancel the guidance about Eid days.
- Ibn Umar directed the questioner back to the Prophet’s صلى الله عليه وسلم example.
- Regular fasting should still follow the limits shown in the Sunnah.
