Sahih Bukhari 6952 — Help the Oppressed and Stop Oppression
The oath of a man that his companion is his brother when he fears

Anas Narrated from:
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Help your brother whether he is an oppressor or an oppressed," A man said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! I will help him if he is oppressed, but if he is an oppressor, how shall I help him?" The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "By preventing him from oppressing (others), for that is how to help him."

Summary of Sahih Bukhari Hadith 6952
This Hadith explains the famous teaching: help your brother whether he is an oppressor or oppressed. At first, a man understood the part about helping the oppressed, but he asked how a person could help someone who is doing wrong. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم gave a clear answer. Helping the oppressor does not mean supporting his wrong action. It means preventing him from oppression. This makes the Hadith about helping the oppressed very practical. It teaches that real help may sometimes mean stopping someone from harming others. Brotherhood is not blind loyalty. It is care that protects the victim and also saves the wrongdoer from continuing injustice.
What we learn from this hadith
- Helping the oppressed means standing with someone who is being wronged.
- Helping an oppressor means stopping him from doing oppression.
- True support is not approval of wrongdoing.
