حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ، أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، قَالَ كُنَّا نَتَّقِي الْكَلاَمَ وَالاِنْبِسَاطَ إِلَى نِسَائِنَا عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ مَخَافَةَ أَنْ يُنْزَلَ فِينَا الْقُرْآنُ فَلَمَّا مَاتَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ تَكَلَّمْنَا .
Ibn 'Umar Narrated from:
We used to be guarded in our speech even with our wives at the time of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), fearing that Qur’an may be revealed amongst us, but when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) died, we began to speak freely.”

This Hadith about guarded speech records a statement from Ibn ‘Umar. He said that during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم, they were careful in speech and openness even with their wives, because they feared that Qur’an might be revealed about them. After the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم died, they began to speak freely. The report shows the strong sense of watchfulness that some Companions felt while revelation was still coming down. It should not be turned into a broad claim about all speech in every setting. The text simply contrasts their caution during the Prophet’s lifetime with their later freedom in speaking.
