Abu Zubair reports from Jabir that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم separated himself from his wives for a month, then came out on the morning of the twenty-ninth. Some people mentioned that they had reached only the morning of the twenty-ninth. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم replied that the month may also consist of twenty-nine days. He then showed this by his hands: two full counts with all fingers, and the third with nine. This Ramadan month length hadith is simple and visual. It teaches that the lunar month can end at twenty-nine. The report also shows that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم answered the people’s concern with a direct explanation.
