Ibn 'Abbas Narrated from:

There is another hadith narrated on the authority of Ibn Abbas (the contents of which are similar to the one) narrated by Shu'ba in which the Prophet (ﷺ) said: I forbid you to prepare nabidh in a gourd, hollowed block of wood, a varnished jar or receptacle. Ibn Mu'adh made this addition on the authority of his father that the Messenger of Allah said to Ashajj, of the tribe of 'Abdul-Qais: You possess two qualities which are liked by Allah: insight and deliberateness.

Summary of Sahih Muslim Hadith 17c

This hadith about qualities loved by Allah is linked to the report of the Abdul Qais delegation. It repeats the prohibition of preparing nabidh in certain vessels: a gourd, a hollowed block of wood, a varnished jar, or a receptacle. Then the narration adds that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said to Ashajj of Abdul Qais that he had two qualities loved by Allah: insight and deliberateness. The Hadith has two clear parts. One part gives a rule about named drink vessels. The other part praises calm and thoughtful qualities in a person. The explanation should stay with those points and not turn the text into a wider ruling beyond what is stated here.

What we learn from this hadith

  • The narration repeats the prohibition of preparing nabidh in named vessels.
  • Ashajj is praised for two qualities: insight and deliberateness.
  • The Hadith shows that calm, thoughtful conduct is loved by Allah.
