وَحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الأَحْوَصِ، سَلاَّمُ بْنُ سُلَيْمٍ عَنِ الأَسْوَدِ، بْنِ قَيْسٍ عَنْ جُنْدَبِ بْنِ سُفْيَانَ، قَالَ شَهِدْتُ الأَضْحَى مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَلَمَّا قَضَى صَلاَتَهُ بِالنَّاسِ نَظَرَ إِلَى غَنَمٍ قَدْ ذُبِحَتْ فَقَالَ " مَنْ ذَبَحَ قَبْلَ الصَّلاَةِ فَلْيَذْبَحْ شَاةً مَكَانَهَا وَمَنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ ذَبَحَ فَلْيَذْبَحْ عَلَى اسْمِ اللَّهِ " .
Jundub bin Sufyan Narrated from:
I was with Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) (on the occasion) of 'Id al-Adha. After he had completed the prayer with people, he found that the goats had been slaughtered, whereupon he said: He who slaughtered sacrificial animal before the prayer should slaughter a goat (again) in its stead and he who has not slaughtered he should slaughter it by reciting the name of Allah.

This narration gives the same practical ruling in plain words. Jundab b. Sufyan was with Allah's Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) on Eid al-Adha. After the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) completed the prayer with the people, he saw goats that had already been slaughtered. He said that whoever slaughtered before the prayer should slaughter a goat again in its place. Whoever had not slaughtered should slaughter on the name of Allah. This is a clear Eid al-Adha sacrifice time hadith. It tells us that the act of Qurbani is not just the cutting of an animal. It has a set time connected to the Eid prayer. It also keeps the worship tied to Allah's name, not only to meat or custom.
What we learn from this hadith
- The Eid prayer comes before the sacrifice.
- A sacrifice done before the prayer is not left as it is; another goat is to be slaughtered in its place.
- The slaughter should be done on the name of Allah.
