Summary of Sahih Muslim Hadith 2380e
This report is short and focused. It says that Ibn Abbas reported on the authority of Ubayy b. Ka'b that Allah's Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم used to recite the phrase, “You could have taken wages for it.” In the longer Musa and Khadir hadith, this phrase appears when Khadir repaired the wall in a village whose people had refused hospitality. Musa said that Khadir could have taken payment for that work. This narration does not repeat the whole story, but it preserves a specific recited wording connected to that moment. Its main topic is careful recitation and wording, not a new event or a separate teaching beyond the reported phrase.
What we learn from this hadith
- The narration preserves a specific wording recited by the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم.
- The phrase is linked to the wall repaired by Khadir in the longer story.
- Short reports can focus on one important wording from a larger narration.
- The text should be explained without adding details not found in it.
