This hadith has been reported on the authority of Ibn Munkadir with the same chain of transmitters but with a slight variation of wording.

Summary of Sahih Muslim Hadith 2591b
This narration reports the same meaning through Ibn Munkadir with a slight wording change. The added wording describes the man as a bad brother of the people and son of the tribe. The main lesson remains the same as the connected report: a person’s foul behavior can become so harmful that people keep away from him to protect themselves from his indecency. The Hadith also shows that kind speech can be used as a wise way to deal with someone difficult. It does not teach flattery or false praise. It teaches controlled speech and warns against becoming a person whose bad tongue or behavior makes others feel unsafe around him.
What we learn from this hadith
- A slight wording change still carries the same warning about foul conduct.
- People may distance themselves from someone to avoid indecency.
- Kind words can be part of wise dealing with difficult people.
- The Hadith warns against becoming known for harmful speech or behavior.
