Sahih MuslimHadith Number 374b
Ibn 'Abbas Narrated from:
We were with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and he had come out of the privy. Food was presented to him. It was said to him (by the Companions around him): Wouldn't you perform ablution? Upon this he said: Why, am I to say prayer that I should perform ablution?

Summary of Sahih Muslim Hadith 374b
This narration answers a common search: is wudu needed before eating? Ibn 'Abbas said they were with the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم after he came out of the privy. Food was presented, and the Companions asked whether he would perform ablution. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم replied, in meaning, why would he do that, was he going to pray? The hadith keeps the issue very direct. It does not discuss every case of cleanliness or every meal habit. It only shows that, in this moment, ablution was not treated as required for eating. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم connected wudu with prayer, not with the food being served.
What we learn from this hadith
- Food being served did not make ablution necessary in this report.
- The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم clarified the reason for wudu in this situation.
- The Companions asked, and the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم gave a short, clear answer.
