`Abdullah bin `Abbas Narrated from:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) stood and the people stood with him, and he said the takbir and they said the takbir. Then he bowed, and some of them bowed, then he prostrated and they prostrated, then he stood for the second rak'ah and those who had prostrated with him moved back and guarded their brothers, and the other group came and bowed and prostrated with the Prophet (ﷺ). All the people were praying and saying the takbir, but they were guarding one another.

Summary of Sunan an-Nasai Hadith 1534

This hadith about fear prayer gives a detailed picture of prayer and guarding. Ibn Abbas said that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم stood and the people stood with him. He said the takbir, and they said the takbir. Then he bowed and some of them bowed. He prostrated, and they prostrated. When he stood for the second rak'ah, those who had prostrated moved back and guarded their brothers. Then the other group came and bowed and prostrated with the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم. The narration says that all the people were in prayer and saying takbir, but they were guarding one another. The main lesson is that even in fear, prayer remained organized, shared, and watchful.

What we learn from this hadith

  • The takbir was part of the prayer described in the narration.
  • Groups took turns joining the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم in bowing and prostration.
