Summary of Sunan an-Nasai Hadith 5696
A man asked Ibn Umar about drinks, and Ibn Umar answered with a short rule: avoid everything that intoxicates. The narration does not give a long list of drinks, vessels, fruits, or places. It simply gives the line a person should not cross. This hadith about avoiding intoxicants is easy to remember and easy to share. If a drink intoxicates, the answer in this report is to avoid it. It also helps when people are confused by many names for drinks. Instead of asking only what a drink is called, the believer should ask whether it intoxicates. That is the point Ibn Umar gives in his answer.
What we learn from this hadith
- The answer focuses on intoxication as the deciding issue.
- A short rule can guide many drink questions.
- The narration teaches avoidance, not trying to get close to intoxicants.
