Laylatul Qadr

What is Laylatul Qadr? – The Night of Power in Islam

Laylatul Qadr, also known as the Night of Power or Night of Decree, is the holiest night in Islam. This is the night when Allah revealed the first verses of the Holy Quran to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ through Angel Jibreel (AS) in the Cave of Hira.

The word "Laylatul Qadr" comes from Arabic. "Laylah" means night, and "Qadr" means power, decree, or destiny. So Laylatul Qadr means "The Night of Power" or "The Night of Decree".

Allah says in the Quran about this blessed night:

"Indeed, We sent it (the Quran) down during the Night of Decree. And what can make you know what the Night of Decree is? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months." (Surah Al-Qadr: 1-3)

This means worshipping Allah on Laylatul Qadr is better than worshipping for 1,000 months — that is more than 83 years of continuous ibadah! Every prayer, every Quran recitation, every dua on this night carries unimaginable reward.

On this night, Allah also decides the destiny of all creation for the coming year. The angels, including Jibreel (AS), descend to earth with Allah's mercy and blessings. Allah says:

"The angels and the Spirit (Jibreel) descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter. Peace it is until the emergence of dawn." (Surah Al-Qadr: 4-5)

This is why Laylatul Qadr is called the Night of Decree — it is when Allah writes what will happen in the next year for every person.

Signs of Laylatul Qadr – How to Know the Night of Power

No one knows the exact date of Laylatul Qadr. Allah has kept it hidden. But Prophet Muhammad ﷺ told us some signs that appear on or after this blessed night.
  • The night feels calm and peaceful
One of the main signs of Laylatul Qadr is that the night is very calm. It is not too hot and not too cold. The weather feels gentle and pleasant. The Prophet ﷺ said:
"Laylatul Qadr is a calm, peaceful night. It is neither hot nor cold. And the sun rises the next morning weak and reddish." (Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah: 2192)
  • The sun rises without strong rays the next morning
This is the most famous sign of Laylatul Qadr. The morning after the Night of Power, the sun looks weak and pale. It does not have bright, sharp rays. Ubayy ibn Ka'b (RA) said:
"By the sign which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ told us — the sun rises that morning with no visible rays." (Sahih Muslim: 762)
  • The moon looks like half a plate
Another sign of Laylatul Qadr is the shape of the moon. On this night, the moon appears like half of a plate in the sky. Ibn Abbas (RA) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said:
"Laylatul Qadr is a pleasant night, neither hot nor cold, and the moon on that night looks like half a plate." (Musnad al-Tayalisi: 2802)
  • Rain may fall on that night or the day before
Sometimes rain falls on Laylatul Qadr or during the day before it. Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (RA) said that the Prophet ﷺ once made sujood in mud and water on the morning of the 21st night of Ramadan. This showed that it had rained on the Night of Power. (Sahih al-Bukhari: 2018)
