What Islam Teaches About Prohibited Marriages in Sahih Hadiths

According to Islamic scholars and the authentic statements of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), certain marital unions are strictly forbidden to maintain societal morals and respect biological boundaries. In these traditions, the Prophet (ﷺ) explicitly prohibits marrying two sisters simultaneously, marrying one's stepdaughters, or marrying individuals connected through fosterage (suckling), such as a foster niece. Furthermore, companions like Ibn 'Abbas outlined seven types of marriages made unlawful due to blood relations and seven due to marriage alliances. These narrations emphasize that while temporary marriage contracts were addressed in early historical contexts, permanent restrictions regarding close kinship, foster relations, and specific familial combinations remain foundational to safeguarding the sanctity of the family unit in Islamic law.

Narrated 'Abdullah: We used to participate in the holy battles led by Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and we had nothing (no wives) with us. So we said, "Shall we get ourselves castrated?" He forbade us that and then allowed us to marry women with a temporary contract (2) and recited to us: -- 'O you who believe ! Make not unlawful the good things which Allah has made lawful for you, but commit no transgression.' (5.87)

[1] This sort of marriage (i.e., Nikāh-al-Mut'a ) was later on forbidden forever. (See H.5115)Reference : Sahih al-Bukhari 5075In-book reference : Book 67, Hadith 13USC-MSA web (English) reference : Vol. 7, Book 62, Hadith 13

The aforesaid tradition has also been transmitted by ‘Ali through a different chain of narrators from the Prophet (ﷺ) to the same effect.

Abdullah (b. Mas'ud) reported: We were on an expedition with Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and we had no women with us. We said: Should we not have ourselves castrated? He (the Holy Prophet) forbade us to do so He then granted us permission that we should contract temporary marriage for a stipulated period giving her a garment, and 'Abdullah then recited this verse: 'Those who believe do not make unlawful the good things which Allah has made lawful for you, and do not transgress. Allah does not like trangressers" (al-Qur'an, v. 87).

Imran bin Husain narrated that : The Prophet Said: "There Is No Jalab, No Janab, And No Shighar In Islam. And Whoever Takes Some Property By Force, Then He Is Not From Us."

[2] " Jalab and Janab can occur in racing and in Zakāt . As for the Jalab in racing, it is when a man follows his horse shouting and screaming at it in order to drive and encourage it on. Janab is when he has a horse next to his horse, so that when the one he is riding tires he can change to (the other one). Jalab in Zakāt is when the Zakāt collector does not come close to the people, but he halts somewhere and sends someone who will fetch the wealth for him from its different locations so that he can take the charities from them, and Janab is when the owner of the wealth keeps it at such a distance from where he is, that the collector has to go far away to get it."
