What Do Prophetic Hadiths Teach Us About Sharing Beds?

According to Islamic scholars, maintaining personal privacy and modesty is a fundamental principle, especially when sharing beds or sleeping quarters. The authentic prophetic traditions provide clear boundaries to ensure modesty between individuals. The Prophet explicitly stated that a man must not look at the private parts of another man, and a woman must not look at the private parts of another woman. Furthermore, the narrations outline strict rules regarding physical proximity under a single cover. A man is forbidden from lying with another man, and a woman from lying with another woman, under one cover without wearing a proper lower garment to cover their private parts. The text notes that these restrictions safeguard privacy, with exceptions mentioned only for a child or a father. Adhering to these textual boundaries ensures safety, modesty, and respect.

Abu Sa'id al-Khudri Narrated from:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: A man should not look at the private parts of another man, and a woman should not look at the private parts of another woman. A man should not lie with another man without wearing lower garment under one cover; and a woman should not be lie with another woman without wearing lower garment under one cover.
