What Prophetic Hadiths Teach Us About Friday Ghusl

According to Islamic scholars and the authentic teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), taking a bath (Ghusl) on Friday is a highly emphasized act of purification. These hadiths show that taking a bath on Friday is necessary for every adult person preparing to attend the congregational Friday prayer. The teachings encourage Muslims to not only perform Ghusl but to also use a tooth-stick, put on their best clothes, and apply perfume before heading to the mosque. Acting on these etiquettes, walking peacefully without stepping over others, and listening silently to the Imam brings immense spiritual rewards, including the forgiveness of minor sins committed between the two Fridays.

Makhul was asked about the meaning of words ghassala and ightasala (that occur in tradition 345) and he said: one should was one's head and body well (and not than one should makes one's wife wash).

It was narrated from Aws bin Aws that: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Whoever washes (Ghassala) and performs Ghusl, comes early to the Masjid and sits near the Imam, and does not engage in idle talk, he will have for every step he takes (the reward of) a year's worth of good deeds, fasting it and praying Qiyam during it."

[1] Translated with the meaning: "Whoever washes and bathes." Scholars differ a great deal over the meaning of this statement, and some of the wordings are explanatory, like that in Sunan Abû Dâwûd : "Whoever washes his head on Friday, and performs Ghusl " and the comment of some of the narrators in Sunan At-Tirmidhi ; either: " Ightasal refers to him, and Ghassal to his wife" as stated by Wakî' , and they say, that is, he had intercourse that day, which helps him to lower his gaze when going out. They say other than this as well. See An-Nihâyah .Reference : Sunan an-Nasa'i 1381In-book reference : Book 14, Hadith 18English translation : Vol. 2, Book 14, Hadith 1382

Abu Hurairah Narrated from:

Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) (p.b.u.h) said, "Any person who takes a bath on Friday like the bath of Janaba and then goes for the prayer (in the first hour i.e. early), it is as if he had sacrificed a camel (in Allah's cause); and whoever goes in the second hour it is as if he had sacrificed a cow; and whoever goes in the third hour, then it is as if he had sacrificed a horned ram; and if one goes in the fourth hour, then it is as if he had sacrificed a hen; and whoever goes in the fifth hour then it is as if he had offered an egg. When the Imam comes out (i.e. starts delivering the Khutba), the angels present themselves to listen to the Khutba."

Abu Hurairah Narrated from:

While `Umar (bin Al-Khattab) was delivering the Khutba on a Friday, a man entered (the mosque). `Umar asked him, "What has detained you from the prayer?" The man said, "It was only that when I heard the Adhan I performed ablution (for the prayer)." On that `Umar said, "Did you not hear the Prophet saying: 'Anyone of you going out for the Jumua prayer should take a bath'?".
