Authentic Hadiths on Performing Tawaf Around the Kaaba
Performing Tawaf around the Kaaba is a foundational ritual of Hajj and Umrah, deeply rooted in the direct practices of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). According to authentic narrations, the Sunnah method begins at the Black Stone corner. When arriving at Mecca, the Prophet kissed the Black Stone as an act of pure devotion. As noted by Islamic scholars, this is beautifully highlighted by Umar, who stated that he only kissed the stone because he witnessed the Prophet doing so, recognizing that the stone itself holds no power to harm or benefit. Furthermore, the hadiths outline the practice of Ramal, which involves walking quickly. The Prophet ordered his companions to perform Ramal during the first three rounds of Tawaf and walk normally for the remaining four. Initially, this demonstrated physical strength to the pagans who claimed the believers were weakened by the fever of Yathrib. Out of mercy and pity, the Prophet did not mandate Ramal for all seven rounds.

Ibn Umar was informed about the statement of Aisha that a part of al-Hijr is included in the magnitude of the Ka'bah. Ibn Umar said: By Allah, I think that she must have heard it from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). I think that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) had not given up touching both of them but for the reason that they were not on the foundation of the House (the Ka'bah), nor did the people circumambulate (the House) beyond al-Hijr for this reason.

It was narrated that ‘Aishah said: “I asked the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) about the Hijr, and he said: ‘It is part of the House.’ I said: ‘What kept them from incorporating it into it?’ He said: ‘They ran out of funds.’ I said: ‘Why is its door so high up that it can only be reached with a ladder?’* He said: ‘That is what your people did so that they could let in whoever they wanted and keep out whoever they wanted. Were it not that your people have so recently left disbelief behind, and I am afraid that it would bother them, I would have changed it, incorporating what they left out and I would put its door at ground level.”

It was narrated that ‘Aishah said: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) mentioned Safiyyah and we said: ‘She has got her menses.’ He said: ‘ ‘Aqra Halqa!* I think that she has detained us.’ I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, she performed Tawaful-Ifadah on the Day of Sacrifice.’ He said: ‘No then, tell her to depart.’”
[1] The best explanation of this is what Shaikh Safiur-Rahmân Mubârakpuri said in Minnat Al-Mun'im , his commentary on Sahih Muslim : "The meaning of 'Aqra being: 'May Allâh wound her and cause her harm.' And it is said (it means): '(May He) make her barren without children.' And, it is also said: 'She has harmed her people.' And the meaning of Halqa is shaving her hair - and it is the woman's adornment - or, (it means) may she suffer from pain in her throat, or, she sheered her people with her bad fortune, that is, she destroyed them. These are the basic meanings of these two words. Then the Arabs are quick to say things whose reality they do not mean, as they say: 'May Allâh fight him' and 'May your hands be made dirty' and the like." Amr b. Dinar said: We asked Ibn Umar about a person who came for Umra and circumambulated the House, but he did not run between al-Safa' and al-Marwa, whether he is allowed to (put off Ihram) and have intercourse with his wife. He replied: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) circumambulated the House seven times and offered two rak'ahs of prayer after staying (at 'Arafat), and ran between al-Safa and al-Marwa seven times." Verily there is in Allah's Messenger a model pattern for you" (xxxill. 21).
