What Prophetic Hadiths Teach Us About the Prohibition of Interest
In these foundational narrations, Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) provides clear guidance on financial transactions to prevent interest (riba) in everyday trade. According to Islamic scholars, these rules establish economic justice and fairness. The text explicitly outlines that when trading commodities of the same type, such as gold for gold or silver for silver, the exchange must be completely equal in weight and quality. The Prophet (ﷺ) strictly forbade any increase of one over the other, ensuring that transactions are conducted as 'like for like' and 'equal for equal.' Furthermore, the hadiths highlight that these exchanges must happen immediately, hand to hand, as ready money. Selling something that is not present for ready money to be delivered later is completely prohibited under these guidelines. Through these strict instructions, the Prophet (ﷺ) warned the Muslim community against deceptive trade practices and interest-bearing transactions, reinforcing the importance of transparency and mutual equity in all financial dealings.
