Authentic Hadiths on Battles and Ghazwat in Islamic History

These authentic collections offer a direct glimpse into the foundational battles in Islamic history, providing key insights into the struggles and military organization of early Muslims. The texts document the firsthand experiences of companions like Salama bin Al-Akwa`, who participated in numerous campaigns alongside the Prophet peace be upon him. They outline the historical reality of these expeditions, detailing the specific number of major campaigns (Ghazwat) led directly by the Prophet, as well as separate military missions led by appointed commanders like Abu Bakr, Usama, and Ibn Haritha. According to these records, specific engagements like Khaibar, Al-Hudaibiya, Hunain, and Al-Qurad stand as prominent historical checkpoints. Furthermore, the narrations explicitly highlight the deep personal sacrifices endured during these conflicts, recounting how the Prophet himself sustained injuries at the Battle of Uhud, which later prompted divine revelation regarding the nature of authority and guidance.

Narrated Anas: Whenever Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) attacked some people, he would never attack them till it was dawn. If he heard the Adhan (i.e. call for prayer) he would delay the fight, and if he did not hear the Adhan, he would attack them immediately after dawn. We reached Khaibar at night.

[1] The Prophet ﷺ would wait till dawn to see whether the people he was attacking had been converted to Islām or not, and the sign of their embracing Islām will be the pronunciation of the Adhān . He would not attack them if he heard the Adhān .Reference : Sahih al-Bukhari 2943In-book reference : Book 56, Hadith 155USC-MSA web (English) reference : Vol. 4, Book 52, Hadith 193

Narrated Hisham's father: It was mentioned before `Aisha that Ibn `Umar attributed the following statement to the Prophet (ﷺ) "The dead person is punished in the grave because of the crying and lamentation Of his family." On that, `Aisha said, "But Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, 'The dead person is punished for his crimes and sins while his family cry over him then." She added, "And this is similar to the statement of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) when he stood by the (edge of the) well which contained the corpses of the pagans killed at Badr, 'They hear what I say.' She added, "But he said now they know very well what I used to tell them was the truth." `Aisha then recited: 'You cannot make the dead hear.' (30.52) and 'You cannot make those who are in their Graves, hear you.' (35.22) that is, when they had taken their places in the (Hell) Fire.

The Prophet (ﷺ) while speaking about the war prisoners of Badr, said: "Were Al-Mutim bin Adi alive and interceded with me for these filthy people, I would definitely forgive them for his sake." Narrated Said bin Al-Musaiyab: When the first civil strife (in Islam) took place because of the murder of 'Uthman, it left none of the Badr warriors alive. When the second civil strife, that is the battle of Al-Harra, took place, it left none of the Hudaibiya treaty companions alive. Then the third civil strife took place and it did not subside till it had exhausted all the strength of the people.

Narrated Salim's father: That he heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ), when raising his head from bowing of the first rak`a of the morning prayer, saying, "O Allah! Curse so-and-so and so-and-so" after he had said, "Allah hears him who sends his praises to Him. Our Lord, all the Praises are for you!" So Allah revealed:-- "Not for you (O Muhammad! )......(till the end of Verse) they are indeed wrong-doers." (3.128)

Narrated Abu Wail: When Sahl bin Hunaif returned from (the battle of) Siffin, we went to ask him (as to why he had come back). He replied, "(You should not consider me a coward) but blame your opinions. I saw myself on the day of Abu Jandal (inclined to fight), and if I had the power of refusing the order of Allah's Apostle then, I would have refused it (and fought the infidels bravely). Allah and His Apostle know (what is convenient) better. Whenever we put our swords on our shoulders for any matter that terrified us, our swords led us to an easy agreeable solution before the present situation (of disagreement and dispute between the Muslims). When we mend the breach in one side, it opened in another, and we do not know what to do about it."

[1] A battle between 'Alī and Mu'āwiya.(2) They blamed him for not fighting properly in that battle, but he blamed them for fighting their Muslim brethren.(3) During the peace treaty of Al-Hudaibīya , Abū Jandal, a new convert, sought refuge with the Prophet ﷺ from the infidels who had persecuted him. But the Prophet ﷺ, abiding by the conditions of the Treaty, returned him to the infidels. The Companions of the Prophet ﷺ wished that he had not returned him and prepared to fight the infidels.Reference : Sahih al-Bukhari 4189In-book reference : Book 64, Hadith 229USC-MSA web (English) reference : Vol. 5, Book 59, Hadith 502
