What Hadiths Teach Us About the Signs of Allah
According to Islamic scholars, natural cosmic events serve as direct reminders of divine majesty rather than reflections of human affairs. The provided authentic Hadiths clarify a common misconception regarding solar and lunar eclipses. Narrated by Abu Mas'ud and Ibn 'Umar, these traditions explicitly state that the sun and the moon do not undergo an eclipse due to the birth, life, or death of any individual on Earth. Instead, the Prophet Muhammad explained that these celestial occurrences are profound signs amongst the signs of Allah. When believers witness these awe-inspiring events, they are instructed to immediately stand up, turn toward their Creator, and offer prayers. This guidance underscores the core Islamic principle of focusing on devotion and worship during moments of natural wonder, completely steering away from superstitious beliefs or omens.

Ata' reported: I heard 'Ubaid b. 'Umair say: It has been narrated to me by one whom I regard as truthful, (the narrator says: I can well guess that he meant 'A'isha) that the sun eclipsed during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and he stood up (in prayer) for a rigorously long time. He then bowed and then stood up and then bowed and then stood up and then bowed, thus observing three ruku's in two rak'ahs and four prostrations. He then departed and the sun brightened. He pronounced" Allah is the Greatest" while bowing. He would then bow and say:" Allah listened to him who praised Him" while lifting up his head. He then stood up, and praised Allah and lauded Him, and then said: The sun and the moon do not eclipse on the death of anyone or on his birth. But both of them are among the signs of Allah with which Allah terrifies His servants. So when you see them under eclipse, remember Allah till they are brightened.

'Ata said: "I heard Ubaid bin Umair say: 'Someone whom I trust'- and I think he meant Aishah- told me: There was an eclipse of the sun during the time of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). He led the people in prayer and stood for a very long time, then he bowed, then he stood, then he bowed, then he stood, then he bowed. He prayed two rak'ahs, bowing three times in each rak'ah. After bowing for the third time he prostrated for a long time. Some men fainted on that day and had to be revived by having buckets of water thrown over them, because of having stood for so log. When he bowed, he said: Allahu Akbar, and when he raised his head, he said: Sami' Allahu lima hamidah. He did not finish until the eclipse had ended. Then he stood and praised and glorified Allah (SWT) and said: The sun and moon do not eclipse for the death or birth of anyone, but they are two of the signs of Allah (SWT) with which He strikes fear unto you. If they are eclipsed then turn to the remembrance of Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, until it (the eclipse) is over.'"

By Allah, if you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep much.'"
