Prophet Muhammad's Rulings on Killing Women and Children in War

The provided Hadiths outline the clear rules of engagement regarding non-combatants during military conflicts in Islam. In the first two narrations, Ibn 'Umar reports that a woman was discovered dead on the battlefield during an expedition. Upon learning of this, Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) openly rebuked the act and strictly forbade the killing of women and children. The third Hadith, narrated by Ibn 'Abbas, provides nuance regarding unintended casualties; when companions noted that horses trampled over the families of idolaters during nighttime operations, the Prophet responded, 'They are from their fathers.' According to Islamic scholars, this statement addresses the complex reality of collateral exposure in night attacks rather than permitting intentional harm. Collectively, these texts establish a foundational Islamic principle prohibiting the deliberate targeting of women and children during war.
