Authentic Hadiths on Sleeping in a State of Impurity and Bedtime Routines
According to Islamic scholars, establishing a clean and secure bedtime routine is highly encouraged in the Sunnah. The provided prophetic narrations outline specific etiquette for resting when one is in a state of major ritual impurity, known as junub. When asked if a person can sleep before taking a full ritual bath, Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) clarified that it is permissible, provided that they first wash their private parts and perform formal ablution, or wudu, exactly as they would for prayer. Alongside these personal cleanliness practices, the hadiths highlight essential household safety rules before turning in for the night. Believers are advised to put out lights, secure household doors, tie the mouths of water skins, and properly cover all food and drink containers—even if only by placing a small piece of wood across the top to safeguard their provisions.
