Authentic Hadiths on Sadaqah Jariyah and Ongoing Charity

These authentic prophetic narrations highlight the foundational concept of Sadaqah Jariyah, or continuous charity, through the actions of Umar ibn al-Khattab. Upon acquiring a highly valuable and precious piece of land in Khaibar, Umar consulted the Prophet Muhammad on how best to utilize it for the sake of Allah. The Prophet advised him to freeze the principal property—ensuring it could never be sold, inherited, or gifted away—and to distribute its fruits and revenues as charity. Following this guidance, Umar dedicated the estate to support the poor, close relatives, slaves seeking freedom, guests, and wayfarers. The narrations also clarify that the appointed administrator of such an ongoing charity is permitted to eat from its yield and feed friends reasonably, provided they do not exploit the position to accumulate personal wealth.

It was said to her (as she was dying): 'Make a will.' She said: 'To whom shall I make a will? The wealth belongs to Sa'd.' Then she died before Sa'd came. When Sa'd came, he was told about that and he said: 'O Messenger of Allah, will it benefit her if I give in charity on her behalf?' The Prophet said: 'Yes.' Sa'd said: 'Such and such a garden is given in charity on her behalf' -regarding a garden that he named."
