Summary of Jami at-Tirmidhi Hadith 102
This hadith centers on the Sunnah of wiping over khuff. Abu Ubaidah asked Jabir bin Abdullah about wiping over leather socks, and Jabir answered, “It is the Sunnah.” That phrase makes the main point very clear. The same questioner then asked about wiping over the imamah, and Jabir replied by telling him to touch the hair with water. Someone searching “is wiping over khuff Sunnah” or “Jabir wiping over khuff hadith” is looking for this exact report. The narration separates the two questions: one answer is about khuff, and the other answer is about imamah and hair. So the explanation should not mix the two into one broad ruling.
What we learn from this hadith
- Jabir described wiping over the khuff as Sunnah.
- The question about imamah received a separate answer about wetting the hair.
- Asking knowledgeable companions was a way to learn purification.
- Each part of the narration should be understood in its own place.
