Summary of Jami at-Tirmidhi Hadith 1528
This hadith about atonement for an unspecified vow gives a direct answer to a specific type of vow. Uqbah bin Amir narrated that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said the atonement of a vow, when it is not specified, is the atonement of an oath. The wording focuses on a vow that has not been clearly named or defined. It does not speak about every type of vow in detail. It simply connects this unclear vow to kaffarah yamin, the atonement of an oath. This helps a reader see that words have weight, even when they are not well planned. The narration also teaches the need to be clear and careful before making vows.
