Summary of Jami at-Tirmidhi Hadith 1614
This hadith about tiyarah is narrated from ‘Abdullah bin Mas‘ud. The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said, “At-Tiyarah is from shirk.” The narration then says that none among us is untouched by its influence, but Allah removes it with tawakkul, meaning reliance upon Allah. Abu ‘Eisa records comments about whether the second phrase may be from the words of ‘Abdullah bin Mas‘ud, and he grades the hadith hasan sahih. The main lesson is to reject bad omens and not let fear of signs control the heart. The cure named in the report is tawakkul. People search this as “tiyarah is shirk hadith,” “bad omen hadith,” and “tawakkul removes superstition.”
What we learn from this hadith
- Tiyarah, or taking bad omens, is strongly linked to shirk in the wording.
- The narration points to tawakkul as the way Allah removes that influence.
- Abu ‘Eisa includes a narrator note about part of the wording.
