Sahl bin Mu'adh bin Anas Al-Juhani Narrated from:

Sahl bin Mu'adh bin Anas Al-Juhani narrated from his father, that the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w)said: "Whoever Leaves(Valuable) Dress Out Of Humility To Allah While He Is Able To (Afford It), Allah Will Call Him Before The Heads Of Creation On The Day Of Judgement So That He Can Chose Whichever Hulal Of Faith He Wishes To Wear." The Meaning Of His Saying: "Hulal Of Faith" Is The Garments Of Paradise Which Are Given To The People Of Faith.

Summary of Jami at-Tirmidhi Hadith 2481

This hadith about humility in clothing teaches that a person may have the means to wear valuable dress, yet chooses simplicity for the sake of Allah. The key point is not poverty, neglect, or showing off plainness. The text says the person is able to afford it, but leaves it out of humility to Allah. The reward mentioned is honor on the Day of Judgment, when Allah will call him before creation and allow him to choose from the garments of faith. The narration also explains that the garments of faith mean garments of Paradise given to people of faith. So the lesson is about sincere modesty, not seeking praise from people.

What we learn from this hadith

  • Choosing simplicity can be an act of humility when done for Allah.
  • The hadith praises leaving valuable dress while still being able to afford it.
  • Humility should be linked to faith, not to showing off plain clothing.
