I Heard 'Abdur-Rahman Bin 'Abdullah Bin Mas'Ud Narrating From His Father Who Said: 'I Heard The Messenger Of Allah (ﷺ) Saying: 'May Allah Gladden A Man Who Hears Something From Us, So He Conveys It As He Heard It. Perhaps The One It Is Conveyed To Is More Understanding Than The One Who Heard It.'

Summary of Jami at-Tirmidhi Hadith 2657

This hadith about conveying hadith as heard teaches careful transmission. The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said, may Allah gladden a man who hears something from us and conveys it as he heard it. He then said that perhaps the one it is conveyed to is more understanding than the one who heard it. The meaning is simple and important: do not change the Prophet's words carelessly. Preserve them and pass them on with accuracy. Sometimes the listener who receives the report later may understand its meaning better. This hadith supports honest narration, careful memory, and respect for the exact wording of prophetic knowledge.

What we learn from this hadith

  • Prophetic words should be conveyed as they were heard.
  • The one who receives a report may understand it better than the first hearer.
  • Accurate transmission is praised in this hadith.
  • A person should be careful when sharing hadith.
