Summary of Jami at-Tirmidhi Hadith 2745
This hadith describes the Prophet’s صلى الله عليه وسلم own manner when he sneezed. Abu Hurairah narrated that when the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم would sneeze, he covered his face with his hand or with his garment, and he muffled the sound with it. The main lesson is clear: the sunnah of sneezing is not only about words like Alhamdulillah and Yarhamukallah. It is also about polite action. Covering the face and lowering the sound show care for the people nearby. This hadith about covering the mouth when sneezing is short, but it gives a complete picture of refined manners. It teaches that a Muslim’s adab includes the way he handles natural actions in front of others.
What we learn from this hadith
- Cover the face or mouth area when sneezing, as described in the hadith.
- Lowering the sound of a sneeze is part of good manners here.
- The Prophet’s صلى الله عليه وسلم example joins clean action with polite behavior.
- Natural actions should still be handled with care around people.
