حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ وَكِيعٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي وَيَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ أَبِي خَالِدٍ، عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ أَبِي حَازِمٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو سَهْلَةَ، قَالَ قَالَ لِي عُثْمَانُ يَوْمَ الدَّارِ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَدْ عَهِدَ إِلَىَّ عَهْدًا فَأَنَا صَابِرٌ عَلَيْهِ . قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ لاَ نَعْرِفُهُ إِلاَّ مِنْ حَدِيثِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ أَبِي خَالِدٍ .
Abu Sahlah Narrated from:
The Day Of The House (When He Was Besieged), 'Uthman Said: 'Indeed The Messenger Of Allah (ﷺ) Took A Covenant From Me, And I Will Abide By It.'

Summary of Jami at-Tirmidhi Hadith 3711
This Hadith about Uthman’s covenant and patience is short and moving. Abu Sahlah narrated that on the Day of the House, when Uthman was besieged, Uthman said, “Indeed the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم took a covenant from me, and I will abide by it.” The report does not tell us the full wording of the covenant here, so the explanation should not add details beyond the text. What is clear is that Uthman connected his patience to something the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم had entrusted to him. The main theme is staying firm upon prophetic instruction during pressure. It also shows that Uthman saw his response as obedience and patience, not personal weakness.
