Summary of Jami at-Tirmidhi Hadith 514

This narration is about sitting posture during the Friday khutbah. Sahl bin Ma'adh narrates from his father that the Prophet prohibited al-habwah on Friday while the imam is delivering the khutbah. Al-habwah refers to sitting with the legs drawn up and held close to the body, as understood from the wording used in related discussions. The Arabic text says Abu Eisa graded this hadith hasan. It also records that some scholars disliked al-habwah during the khutbah, while others allowed it, including a view reported from Ibn Umar and the view of Ahmad and Ishaq. So the explanation should stay balanced and not present only one side of the later discussion.

What we learn from this hadith

  • The hadith reports a prohibition of al-habwah during Friday khutbah.
  • Abu Eisa graded the narration as hasan.
  • The text records scholarly difference about this sitting posture.
  • A worshipper should choose a posture that helps listening and respect.
