Summary of Jami at-Tirmidhi Hadith 737
This narration is another chain with a similar meaning about the Prophet’s fasting in Sha'ban. The Arabic comment from Ibn al-Mubarak is very useful for careful reading. He explains that in Arabic speech, if someone fasted most of a month, people may say he fasted the whole month. This helps bring together reports that seem different: one says he fasted all of Sha'ban, while another may mean most of it. So the key phrase is fasting most of Sha'ban. The hadith teaches that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم gave special attention to fasting in this month, but the note stops us from overstating the wording. It guides the reader to understand “all” in a common Arabic style.
What we learn from this hadith
- The report supports the theme of much fasting in Sha'ban.
- Ibn al-Mubarak’s note explains how Arabic may use “all” for “most.”
- The narration helps avoid overstatement about fasting every single day of Sha'ban.
- The focus remains on the Prophet’s strong practice of voluntary fasting before Ramadan.
