Sunan Abi DawudHadith Number 3909

Mu'awiyah b. al-Hakam al-Sulami Narrated from:

I said: Messenger of Allah! among us there are men who practice divination by drawing lines. He said: There was a Prophet who drew lines, so if anyone does it as he drew lines, that is right.

[1] Al-Khaṭṭ : The drawing of lines or the like in sand for the purpose of making decisions. It is also called At-Tarq , or ' Ilm ar-Raml '. It is referred to as "geomancy" in the English language. At-Tarq is also used for casting bones or pebbles and reading them. Al-Iyāfah is said to also refer to taking an omen from the behavior, names, and songs of birds.[1] Regarding the meaning of: "If a person's Khatt is the same as his" An-Nawawī said: "If anyone's Khatt is found to be in accordance with that form of Khatt ; and the form of it is not known, so it is dependant upon what is not possible. It is as if it is a clear prohibition."Reference : Sunan Abi Dawud 3909In-book reference : Book 30, Hadith 6English translation : Book 29, Hadith 3900
