23/96. Chapter:
The graves of the Prophet (pbuh), Abu Bakr, and Umar Radiyallahu Anhu
فَأَقْبَرَهُ} أَقْبَرْتُ الرَّجُلَ إِذَا جَعَلْتَ لَهُ قَبْرًا، وَقَبَرْتُهُ دَفَنْتُهُ. {كِفَاتًا} يَكُونُونَ فِيهَا أَحْيَاءً، وَيُدْفَنُونَ فِيهَا أَمْوَاتًا.Fa aqbara-hu (“then He assigns to him a grave” — the Qur’ān, 80:21). Aqbartu ar-rajula uqbiru-hu means “I made a grave for him”. And qabartu-hu means “I buried him.” Kifāt-an (“draw to itself” — 77:25) means that they (human beings) exist in it (i.e., in the earth) when living, and are buried in it when dead.

حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ، عَنْ هِلاَلٍ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ـ رضى الله عنها ـ قَالَتْ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فِي مَرَضِهِ الَّذِي لَمْ يَقُمْ مِنْهُ " لَعَنَ اللَّهُ الْيَهُودَ وَالنَّصَارَى، اتَّخَذُوا قُبُورَ أَنْبِيَائِهِمْ مَسَاجِدَ ". لَوْلاَ ذَلِكَ أُبْرِزَ قَبْرُهُ، غَيْرَ أَنَّهُ خَشِيَ أَوْ خُشِيَ أَنَّ يُتَّخَذَ مَسْجِدًا. وَعَنْ هِلاَلٍ قَالَ كَنَّانِي عُرْوَةُ بْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ لِي.---------------------------حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُقَاتِلٍ، أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ، أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ عَيَّاشٍ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ التَّمَّارِ، أَنَّهُ حَدَّثَهُ أَنَّهُ، رَأَى قَبْرَ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم مُسَنَّمًا.حَدَّثَنَا فَرْوَةُ، حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيٌّ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، لَمَّا سَقَطَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْحَائِطُ فِي زَمَانِ الْوَلِيدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ أَخَذُوا فِي بِنَائِهِ، فَبَدَتْ لَهُمْ قَدَمٌ فَفَزِعُوا، وَظَنُّوا أَنَّهَا قَدَمُ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَمَا وَجَدُوا أَحَدًا يَعْلَمُ ذَلِكَ حَتَّى قَالَ لَهُمْ عُرْوَةُ لاَ وَاللَّهِ مَا هِيَ قَدَمُ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم مَا هِيَ إِلاَّ قَدَمُ عُمَرَ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ.
Narrated `Aisha: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) in his fatal illness said, "Allah cursed the Jews and the Christians, for they built the places of worship at the graves of their prophets." And if that had not been the case, then the Prophet's grave would have been made prominent before the people. So (the Prophet (ﷺ) ) was afraid, or the people were afraid that his grave might be taken as a place for worship.---------------------------Narrated Abu Bakr bin `Aiyash: Sufyan at-Tammar told me that he had seen the grave of the Prophet (ﷺ) elevated and convex.Narrated `Urwa: When the wall fell on them (i.e. graves) during the caliphate of Al-Walid bin `Abdul Malik, the people started repairing it, and a foot appeared to them. The people got scared and thought that it was the foot of the Prophet. No one could be found who could tell them about it till I (`Urwa) said to them, "By Allah, this is not the foot of the Prophet (ﷺ) but it is the foot of `Umar."
