Hadith About the Unseen: The Prophet Corrects a Wedding Song

Sahih BukhariHadith Number 4001

Ar-Rubai bint Muauwidh Narrated from:

The Prophet (ﷺ) came to me the night my marriage was consummated and sat down on my bed as you (the sub-narrator) are sitting now, and small girls were beating the tambourine and singing in lamentation of my father who had been killed on the day of the battle of Badr. Then one of the girls said, "There is a Prophet amongst us who knows what will happen tomorrow." The Prophet (ﷺ) said (to her)," Do not say this, but go on saying what you have spoken before."

Summary of Sahih Bukhari Hadith 4001

This hadith is often searched as a hadith about unseen knowledge and the wedding tambourine hadith. Ar-Rubai bint Muawwidh described that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم visited her on the morning after her marriage. Small girls were beating the tambourine and singing about fathers who had been killed at Badr. When one girl said that there was a Prophet among them who knew what would happen tomorrow, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم stopped that line. He told her not to say it and to continue with what she had been saying before. The teaching is clear from the text: praise should stay within the limits of truth, even at a happy event like a wedding.

What we learn from this hadith

  • Religious praise should not include claims the Prophet
  • The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم allowed the earlier words but stopped the wrong statement.
  • Happy occasions should still keep speech honest and respectful.
