Hadith About Wedding Tambourine and Correct Belief

Sahih BukhariHadith Number 5147

Ar-Rabi` Narrated from:

After the consummation of my marriage, the Prophet (ﷺ) came and sat on my bed as far from me as you are sitting now, and our little girls started beating the tambourines and reciting elegiac verses mourning my father who had been killed in the battle of Badr. One of them said, "Among us is a Prophet who knows what will happen tomorrow." On that the Prophet said, "Leave this (saying) and keep on saying the verses which you had been saying before."

[1] Her father and two uncles had been killed in the battle of Badr. By saying, "My fathers" she meant that her two uncles were as dear to her as her father was.(1) The Prophet ﷺ forbade the girl to say so, because none knows the future except Allāh.Reference : Sahih al-Bukhari 5147In-book reference : Book 67, Hadith 82USC-MSA web (English) reference : Vol. 7, Book 62, Hadith 77

Summary of Sahih Bukhari Hadith 5147

This Hadith describes a wedding gathering after the marriage of Ar-Rabi. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم came and sat nearby while young girls beat tambourines and recited verses about those killed at Badr. When one girl said that there was a Prophet among them who knew what would happen tomorrow, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم corrected her. He told her to leave that saying and continue with what she had been saying before. This hadith about wedding tambourine teaches two clear points from the text. Wedding joy was present in that gathering, and words about unseen future knowledge were corrected. Joy should stay within truthful speech.

What we learn from this hadith

  • Wedding joy can include simple celebration mentioned in the text.
  • Good words at a wedding should remain truthful.
  • The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم corrected a statement that went beyond what should be said.
  • A person may continue harmless words while leaving a wrong statement.
