Sahih Bukhari 4046 — Martyrdom and Paradise at Uhud

The Ghazwa of Uhud

And the Statement of Allah جل جلاله: "And (remember) when you (O Muhammad ﷺ) left your household in the morning to post the believers at their stations for battle, (of Uhud). And Allah is All-Hearer, All-Knower." (V. 3:121) Also the Statement of Allah جل جلاله: "So do not become weak (against your enemy), nor be sad, and you will be superior (in victory) if you are indeed (true) believers. If a wound (and killing) had touched you, be sure a similar wound (and killing) has touched the others. And so are the days (good and not so good), We give to men by turns, that Allah may test those who believe, and that He may take martyrs from among you. And Allah likes not the Zalimun (wrong-doers, polytheists). And that Allah may test (or purify) the believers (from sins), and destroy the disbelievers. Do you think that you will enter Paradise before Allah tests those of you who fought (in His Cause) and (also) tests those who are As-Sabirin (the patient)? You did indeed wish for death (Ash-Shahadah – martyrdom) before you met it. Now you have seen it openly with your own eyes." (V. 3:139-143) And His Statement: "And Allah did indeed fulfil His Promise to you when you were killing them (your enemy)… (till the end of the Verse) … And Allah is Most Gracious to the believers." (V. 3:152) And His Statement: "Think not of those as dead who are killed in the Way of Allah …" (V. 3:169)

Sahih al-Bukhari 4046: Martyrdom in Paradise Hadith from Uhud

Sahih BukhariHadith Number 4046

Jabir bin `Abdullah Narrated from:

On the day of the battle of Uhud, a man came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said, "Can you tell me where I will be if I should get martyred?" The Prophet (ﷺ) replied, "In Paradise." The man threw away some dates he was carrying in his hand, and fought till he was martyred.

Summary of Sahih Bukhari Hadith 4046

This martyrdom in Paradise hadith is brief and direct. During the Battle of Uhud, a man asked the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) where he would be if he was killed as a martyr. The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) answered, “In Paradise.” The man then threw away the dates he was holding and fought until he was martyred. The text shows quick faith and action after hearing the Prophet’s answer. It also shows how a small worldly item, like dates in the hand, can be left when a person chooses something greater in that moment. The Hadith should be read as the report of this specific man at Uhud. Its clear teaching is about trust in the Prophet’s words and readiness to act when faith becomes clear.

What we learn from this hadith

  • The man asked the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) before acting.
  • The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) answered him with the promise of Paradise in that situation.
  • The man left the dates in his hand and moved to action.
  • The report shows strong trust in the Prophet’s words.
