Sahih Bukhari 4047 — Migration Seeking Allah’s Pleasure
The Ghazwa of Uhud
And the Statement of Allah جل جلاله: "And (remember) when you (O Muhammad ﷺ) left your household in the morning to post the believers at their stations for battle, (of Uhud). And Allah is All-Hearer, All-Knower." (V. 3:121) Also the Statement of Allah جل جلاله: "So do not become weak (against your enemy), nor be sad, and you will be superior (in victory) if you are indeed (true) believers. If a wound (and killing) had touched you, be sure a similar wound (and killing) has touched the others. And so are the days (good and not so good), We give to men by turns, that Allah may test those who believe, and that He may take martyrs from among you. And Allah likes not the Zalimun (wrong-doers, polytheists). And that Allah may test (or purify) the believers (from sins), and destroy the disbelievers. Do you think that you will enter Paradise before Allah tests those of you who fought (in His Cause) and (also) tests those who are As-Sabirin (the patient)? You did indeed wish for death (Ash-Shahadah – martyrdom) before you met it. Now you have seen it openly with your own eyes." (V. 3:139-143) And His Statement: "And Allah did indeed fulfil His Promise to you when you were killing them (your enemy)… (till the end of the Verse) … And Allah is Most Gracious to the believers." (V. 3:152) And His Statement: "Think not of those as dead who are killed in the Way of Allah …" (V. 3:169)

Sahih BukhariHadith Number 4047
Khabbab bin Al-Art Narrated from:
We migrated in the company of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ), seeking Allah's Pleasure. So our reward became due and sure with Allah. Some of us have been dead without enjoying anything of their rewards (here), and one of them was Mus'ab bin 'Umar who was martyred on the day of the battle of Uhud, and did not leave anything except a Namira (i.e. a sheet in which he was shrouded). If we covered his head with it, his feet became naked, and if we covered his feet with it, his head became naked. So the Prophet (ﷺ) said to us, "Cover his head with it and put some Idhkhir (i.e. a kind of grass) over his feet or throw Idhkhir over his feet." But some amongst us have got the fruits of their labor ripened, and they are collecting them.

Summary of Sahih Bukhari Hadith 4047
This Hadith about migration seeking Allah’s Pleasure begins with a clear statement from Khabbab bin Al-Art: they migrated with Allah’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم), seeking Allah’s Pleasure, so their reward became due with Allah. He then mentions that some companions died without taking anything of their reward in this life. Musab bin Umair is given as an example. He was martyred at Uhud and left only a small sheet. If they covered his head, his feet showed; if they covered his feet, his head showed. The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) told them to cover his head and place Idhkhir grass over his feet. The report ends by noting that others lived to see the fruits of their labor. The lesson is sincerity, patience, and remembering that worldly outcomes differ.
What we learn from this hadith
- Khabbab describes the migration as being for Allah’s Pleasure.
- Some companions died before receiving worldly ease.
- The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) guided them in shrouding Musab with what was available.
- The report notes that some later lived to see worldly fruits.
