Sahih Bukhari 4048 — Anas bin An-Nadr and the Scent of Paradise

The Ghazwa of Uhud

And the Statement of Allah جل جلاله: "And (remember) when you (O Muhammad ﷺ) left your household in the morning to post the believers at their stations for battle, (of Uhud). And Allah is All-Hearer, All-Knower." (V. 3:121) Also the Statement of Allah جل جلاله: "So do not become weak (against your enemy), nor be sad, and you will be superior (in victory) if you are indeed (true) believers. If a wound (and killing) had touched you, be sure a similar wound (and killing) has touched the others. And so are the days (good and not so good), We give to men by turns, that Allah may test those who believe, and that He may take martyrs from among you. And Allah likes not the Zalimun (wrong-doers, polytheists). And that Allah may test (or purify) the believers (from sins), and destroy the disbelievers. Do you think that you will enter Paradise before Allah tests those of you who fought (in His Cause) and (also) tests those who are As-Sabirin (the patient)? You did indeed wish for death (Ash-Shahadah – martyrdom) before you met it. Now you have seen it openly with your own eyes." (V. 3:139-143) And His Statement: "And Allah did indeed fulfil His Promise to you when you were killing them (your enemy)… (till the end of the Verse) … And Allah is Most Gracious to the believers." (V. 3:152) And His Statement: "Think not of those as dead who are killed in the Way of Allah …" (V. 3:169)

Sahih al-Bukhari 4048: Anas bin An-Nadr and the Scent of Paradise at Uhud

Sahih BukhariHadith Number 4048

Anas Narrated from:

Narrated Anas: His uncle (Anas bin An-Nadr) was absent from the battle of Badr and he said, "I was absent from the first battle of the Prophet (i.e. Badr battle), and if Allah should let me participate in (a battle) with the Prophet, Allah will see how strongly I will fight." So he encountered the day of Uhud battle. The Muslims fled and he said, "O Allah ! I appeal to You to excuse me for what these people (i.e. the Muslims) have done, and I am clear from what the pagans have done."Then he went forward with his sword and met Sad bin Mu'adh (fleeing), and asked him, "Where are you going, O Sad? I detect a smell of Paradise before Uhud." Then he proceeded on and was martyred. No-body was able to recognize him till his sister recognized him by a mole on his body or by the tips of his fingers. He had over 80 wounds caused by stabbing, striking or shooting with arrows.

Summary of Sahih Bukhari Hadith 4048

This Anas bin An-Nadr hadith is a moving report of courage at Uhud. He had missed Badr and said that if Allah let him join a battle with the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم), Allah would see how strongly he would fight. At Uhud, when people fled, he turned to Allah, apologized for what the Muslims had done, and declared himself clear of what the pagans had brought. He then moved forward with his sword. When he met Sa’d bin Mu’adh, he spoke of the scent of Paradise before Uhud. He continued until he was martyred. The report says he was recognized only by his sister through a mark or his fingertips, and that he had over eighty wounds. The Hadith teaches resolve, honest words, and action in a hard hour.
