Sahih Bukhari 4050 — Taiba and the Test of Hypocrisy

The Ghazwa of Uhud

And the Statement of Allah جل جلاله: "And (remember) when you (O Muhammad ﷺ) left your household in the morning to post the believers at their stations for battle, (of Uhud). And Allah is All-Hearer, All-Knower." (V. 3:121) Also the Statement of Allah جل جلاله: "So do not become weak (against your enemy), nor be sad, and you will be superior (in victory) if you are indeed (true) believers. If a wound (and killing) had touched you, be sure a similar wound (and killing) has touched the others. And so are the days (good and not so good), We give to men by turns, that Allah may test those who believe, and that He may take martyrs from among you. And Allah likes not the Zalimun (wrong-doers, polytheists). And that Allah may test (or purify) the believers (from sins), and destroy the disbelievers. Do you think that you will enter Paradise before Allah tests those of you who fought (in His Cause) and (also) tests those who are As-Sabirin (the patient)? You did indeed wish for death (Ash-Shahadah – martyrdom) before you met it. Now you have seen it openly with your own eyes." (V. 3:139-143) And His Statement: "And Allah did indeed fulfil His Promise to you when you were killing them (your enemy)… (till the end of the Verse) … And Allah is Most Gracious to the believers." (V. 3:152) And His Statement: "Think not of those as dead who are killed in the Way of Allah …" (V. 3:169)

Sahih al-Bukhari 4050: Taiba Hadith and the Trial Around Uhud

Sahih BukhariHadith Number 4050

Zaid bin Thabit Narrated from:

When the Prophet (ﷺ) set out for (the battle of) Uhud, some of those who had gone out with him, returned. The companions of the Prophet (ﷺ) were divided into two groups. One group said, "We will fight them (i.e. the enemy)," and the other group said, "We will not fight them."So there came the Divine Revelation:-- '(O Muslims!) Then what is the matter within you that you are divided. Into two parties about the hypocrites? Allah has cast them back (to disbelief) Because of what they have earned.' (4.88)On that, the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "That is Taiba (i.e. the city of Medina) which clears one from one's sins as the fire expels the impurities of silver."

Summary of Sahih Bukhari Hadith 4050

This Taiba hadith takes place when the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) set out for Uhud and some people who had gone with him returned. The companions then split into two views about them: one group said they should fight them, and another said they should not. The narration says the verse was revealed: “Then what is the matter with you that you are divided into two parties about the hypocrites?” The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) then said that Taiba, meaning Medina, clears one from sins as fire expels impurities from silver. The explanation should stay close to this text. It shows a moment of confusion, a revealed correction, and a strong description of Medina’s purifying quality in this report.

What we learn from this hadith

  • Some who set out for Uhud turned back.
  • The companions differed about how to view them.
  • The verse addressed division concerning the hypocrites.
  • The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) described Medina as Taiba, with a cleansing quality.
