حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ دِينَارٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ قَالَ أَمَّرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم أُسَامَةَ عَلَى قَوْمٍ، فَطَعَنُوا فِي إِمَارَتِهِ، فَقَالَ " إِنْ تَطْعَنُوا فِي إِمَارَتِهِ، فَقَدْ طَعَنْتُمْ فِي إِمَارَةِ أَبِيهِ مِنْ قَبْلِهِ، وَايْمُ اللَّهِ لَقَدْ كَانَ خَلِيقًا لِلإِمَارَةِ، وَإِنْ كَانَ مِنْ أَحَبِّ النَّاسِ إِلَىَّ، وَإِنَّ هَذَا لَمِنْ أَحَبِّ النَّاسِ إِلَىَّ بَعْدَهُ ".
Ibn 'Umar Narrated from:
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) appointed Usama bin Zaid as the commander of some people. Those people criticized his leadership. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "If you speak ill of his leadership, you have already spoken ill of his father's leadership before. By Allah, he deserved to be a Commander, and he was one of the most beloved persons to me and now this (i.e. Usama) is one of the most beloved persons to me after him.

This Usama bin Zaid leadership hadith shows how the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم responded when people criticized Usama's command. Ibn Umar narrated that Allah's Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم appointed Usama over a group, and some people spoke against his leadership. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم reminded them that they had also criticized the leadership of his father before. He then said that Zaid deserved command, was among the most beloved people to him, and that Usama was also among the most beloved to him after Zaid. The hadith teaches that leadership should not be judged by shallow criticism. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم pointed to worthiness, trust, and love, not public complaints, as the answer to their objection.
