Sahih BukhariHadith Number 4594

Al-Bara Narrated from:

When the Verse:--"Not equal are those of the believers who sit (at home)," (4.95) was revealed, the Prophet said, "Call so-and-so." That person came to him with an ink-pot and a wooden board or a shoulder scapula bone. The Prophet (ﷺ) said (to him), "Write: 'Not equal are those believers who sit (at home) and those who strive and fight in the Cause of Allah."Ibn Um Maktum who was sitting behind the Prophet (ﷺ) then said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! I am a blind man." So there was revealed in the place of that Verse, the Verse:--"Not equal are those of the believers who sit (at home) except those who are disabled (by injury, or are blind or lame etc.) and those who strive and fight in the Cause of Allah." (4.95)

Summary of Sahih Bukhari Hadith 4594

This Hadith describes the writing of the verse about believers who sit at home and those who strive in the Cause of Allah. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم called someone who came with an ink-pot and a writing board or shoulder bone. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم told him to write the verse. Ibn Um Maktum was behind the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and said, “O Allah’s Messenger, I am a blind man.” Then the verse was revealed with the phrase, “except those who are disabled.” The main topic is disability and Quranic exception. The Hadith shows how a specific need was made clear while revelation was being written. It also shows the care given to the exact wording of the Quran and to people whose condition prevented them from taking part.

What we learn from this hadith

  • The verse was written carefully at the Prophet’s
  • Ibn Um Maktum spoke about his blindness directly.
  • The phrase “except those who are disabled” was revealed in that place.
  • The narration shows care for people unable to join due to disability.
