Hadith About Suckling Relations and Marriage Boundaries

Sahih BukhariHadith Number 5111

Abu Hurairah Narrated from:

The Prophet (ﷺ) forbade that a woman should be married to a man along with her paternal aunt or with her maternal aunt (at the same time). Az-Zuhri (the sub-narrator) said: There is a similar order for the paternal aunt of the father of one's wife, for 'Urwa told me that `Aisha said, "What is unlawful because of blood relations, is also unlawful because of the corresponding foster suckling relations."

Summary of Sahih Bukhari Hadith 5111

This hadith about suckling relations repeats the same important wording found in the previous narration. Abu Huraira reports that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم forbade a woman being married with her paternal aunt or maternal aunt at the same time. Az-Zuhri then mentions that a similar level is considered for the father’s maternal aunt, because Urwa narrated from Aisha that what is unlawful due to blood relations is also unlawful due to matching suckling relations. The value of this report is its clarity. It names a specific marriage combination and then connects it to the broader rule of milk kinship. Readers searching for breastfeeding mahram hadith or milk relations in marriage will find the core teaching here.

What we learn from this hadith

  • A woman should not be combined in marriage with her paternal or maternal aunt.
  • The report connects blood relations with corresponding suckling relations.
  • Aisha’s statement gives a concise rule about milk kinship.
  • Repeated wording helps reinforce the same marriage boundary.
