Sahih Bukhari 5303 — Faith Pointed Toward Yemen and Warning Against Hard Hearts

Al-Li'an

Hadith About Faith in Yemen and the Warning Against Hardness

Sahih BukhariHadith Number 5303

Abu Mas'ud Narrated from:

The Prophet (ﷺ) pointed with his hand towards Yemen and said twice, "Faith is there," and then pointed towards the East, and said, "Verily, sternness and mercilessness are the qualities of those who are busy with their camels and pay no attention to their religion, where the two sides of the head of Satan will appear," namely, the tribes of Rabl'a and Muqar.

Summary of Sahih Bukhari Hadith 5303

This hadith about faith in Yemen contains both praise and warning. The Prophet pointed toward Yemen and said twice, Faith is there. Then he pointed toward the East and spoke about sternness and mercilessness among people busy with their camels and neglectful of religion. The text connects that harsh quality with the place from which the two sides of the head of Satan would appear, naming Rabia and Mudar in the translation. The core message is not a broad license to judge every person by land or tribe. The wording itself focuses on faith, softness, and the danger of hard hearts when worldly occupation makes people careless about religion. It is a strong reminder that belief should shape character.

What we learn from this hadith

  • The Prophet praised faith by pointing toward Yemen.
  • The hadith warns against sternness and mercilessness.
  • Being busy with worldly matters can distract from religion.
  • Faith should be linked with softer hearts, not harsh neglect.
